About Us

The Fig Leaf began life as a fabric store specializing in quality dress fabrics in 1982.  Its beginnings are where it gets its name - Adam and Eve used fig leaves in the Garden of Eden as the first fabric.

The shop is owned by Laura Shotwell and her family.  At the time the store opened, Laura was a dress maker, not a quilter.  She was newly graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in Textiles and Clothing, and had one quilting class under her belt.  She was under the impression that a selection of 25 bolts of calico would provide ample choice to make a quilt, and that was the extent of her quilting supplies when she opened her doors.

Being a quick learner, the quilting inventory grew at a rapid rate, and within 5 years was the bread and butter of The Fig Leaf.  The dress fabric inventory was closed out and replaced with even more cotton fabric.

Today, The Fig Leaf is the oldest and one of the largest quilt shops in Northern Colorado with an inventory of approximately 5,000 bolts of 100% cotton fabric, the latest quilting books and patterns, a full selection of notions, and Brother sewing machines.  If you are new to the area or traveling through the area and want to stop in and see us, you will find a furniture store attached to the quilt shop.  Have fun browsing or shopping, or find a comfortable sofa or recliner and relax while you wait!

We can't wait to see you!
